These free training tools are for the moment the machine you planned on is taken, broken or missing. Each one is built on the same six movement patterns as the Machine Swap Playbook, works on your phone between sets, and costs nothing. Nothing you type into them leaves your device.

Free training tools: the Machine Swap Finder showing the leg press, its movement pattern and three ranked swaps

The Machine Swap Finder with “leg press” typed in: one card, three ranked swaps, each with a load rule.

Free Training Tools

Machine Swap Finder

Type the machine that’s taken and get three ranked swaps, each with setup cues and a load rule. It covers 20 common gym machines, from the lat pulldown to the leg press.

Pairs with: lat pulldown alternatives, leg press alternatives, leg curl alternatives and hip thrust machine alternatives.

Machine Load Converter

Enter what you lifted on the machine and get a starting weight for each swap. Where the stack number doesn’t carry over, it says so and tells you where to start instead.

Pairs with: dumbbell lat exercises and any of the machine alternative guides.

Swap Fault Finder

Describe what feels wrong in your own words, such as “I feel it in my biceps” or “my hips lift”, and get the cause, the fix in order, and how to tell when it’s right.

Loadable Weight Rounder

When the weight you need falls between two dumbbell settings or plate combinations, it shows which one to take and how to close the gap with reps, tempo or small plates.

Adjustable Dumbbell Picker

Answer a few questions about your room, budget and training, and it recommends a type of adjustable dumbbell, or tells you plainly to buy something cheaper first.

Pairs with: the long-term tests of PowerBlock, Ironmaster, NÜOBELL and Bowflex, and how long adjustable dumbbells last.

How the Free Training Tools Fit Together

They are built to be used in order, the way the problem actually shows up in a session.

At the gym, when a station is taken: open the Machine Swap Finder, pick a swap, then put the weight you used on the machine into the Load Converter. That gives you a starting point for the first set instead of a guess. If the swap feels wrong after a set or two, the Swap Fault Finder names the usual cause and the fix.

At home, when you are building a setup: start with the Adjustable Dumbbell Picker, because the mechanism decides how fast you can change weight and how small your jumps are. Then use the Loadable Weight Rounder to see what those jumps mean for the loads you actually train with.

Does Swapping Equipment Cost You Progress?

Less than most people fear. A 2019 systematic review and meta-analysis in SAGE Open Medicine pooled controlled trials comparing training with elastic bands against weight machines and dumbbells, and found no meaningful difference in strength gains for the upper or the lower body.

What does cost progress is a bad swap: the wrong movement pattern, a load pulled from thin air, or a form fault that moves the work to another muscle. Those are the three problems these tools are built to prevent.

The Machine Swap Playbook

The tools answer one question at a time. The playbook is the whole system: every common gym station mapped to its movement pattern, three ranked swaps for each, and the loading rules for dumbbells, barbells and bands. Forty pages, free.

Questions People Ask About These Free Training Tools

Are the free training tools really free?

Yes. There is no sign-up and no paywall. Some tools link to equipment on Amazon, and WildnSwole earns a commission if you buy through those links, which does not change what you pay.

Do they work on a phone at the gym?

Yes. Every tool is a single page built for a phone screen, with no app to install.

Where do the swaps and loading rules come from?

From the Machine Swap Playbook, which maps each gym machine to one of six movement patterns and ranks three swaps for each. Where a tool adds something the playbook does not cover, it says so on the page.

Which tool should I start with?

If a machine is taken right now, start with the Machine Swap Finder. If you are deciding what to buy for a home gym, start with the Adjustable Dumbbell Picker.
